This plant can be used as an evergreen shrub or as a small tree. It produces a densely rounded canopy. Its leaves are leathery in texture, dark green in color, and serrated along the edges. The Yaupon is dioecious meaning that the male and female flowers are born on separate plants. Tiny white flowers are inconspicuous in the spring. Female flowers are followed by small bright red berries that last through fall and winter. It is a hardy plant that is tolerant of drought.
